Wood Deck Builder Serving Dodge, Outagamie, and Winnebago Counties
We build beautiful decks out of cedar or pressure treated lumber

The charm and grace of a wood deck serve as a timeless enhancement to your home, effortlessly merging the natural beauty of the outdoors with the comfort of your indoor living spaces. Many homeowners in Wisconsin choose to build their decks from wood, appreciating its affordability, ease of handling, and the traditional appeal that it brings to their homes.

Among the diverse options available, pressure-treated decking materials stand out as a popular choice. Its cost-effectiveness and resistance to decay and insects make it an ideal choice for homeowners seeking durability without compromising the aesthetic appeal. It's easy to work with and readily available, making it a favorite among both homeowners and builders alike.

However, if you are inclined towards a more luxurious touch, consider options like redwood, cedar, or the premium Ipe. While these options represent a higher investment, they promise an unmatched richness and feel, rewarding homeowners with their unique textures and colors. Cedar, with its striking grain and natural resistance to insects and rot, offers a harmonious blend of beauty and durability. Redwood, recognized for its gorgeous hue and longevity, is another fantastic choice, while Ipe, though more expensive, delivers exceptional hardness and resistance to weather conditions, guaranteeing a deck that stands the test of time.

In the hands of a skilled builder, these materials can be transformed into a stunning deck that harmonizes with your Wisconsin home's style, creating an inviting outdoor space for you to relax, entertain, and enjoy nature. Let the allure of a wood deck bring a fresh and captivating look to your home, capturing the essence of natural beauty right in your backyard.

What’s The Difference In Wood For Decking?

Pressure Treated Decking:  It’s very resistant to rot and insects and it also withstands moisture very well, not to mention it’s readily available which also makes it affordable.  Pressure treated wood doesn’t necessarily need to be painted if you like the dark brown, or dark green color variations that it comes in.  Most pressure treated decking material is milled from southern yellow pine.  Brad's Construction can build you a deck out of pressure treated lumber throughout the Wisconsin area.

Redwood & Cedar Decking: If budget isn’t an issue and you want one of the more elegant looking materials for your deck then redwood or red cedar are great choices. Both of  these western softwoods are highly sought after for their deep rich colors and natural beauty. Both of these species actually contain tannins and oils that help them naturally resist rot, decay and wood boring insects without having to be treated with chemicals.  The crew at Brad's Construction are the Wisconsin Cedar Decking experts!

Ipe Decking:  Also known as Brazilian Walnut or Ironwood Ipe pronounced (Ee-pee) is beautiful looking exotic wood from South America. Ipe is naturally very resistant to rot, abrasion & weather which makes it a good canditate for a deck in our Wisconsin climate.  Ipe’s great looks and performance don’t come without cost however as it’s more expensive than Cedar.  Ipe is definitely not a budget deck material but we work with it enough that Brad's Construction can provide you with an excellent looking Ipe Deck.

If there was just one single exterior home improvement any Wisconsin homeowner could make to their home, that would enhance both the look and property value it would be the addition of a new custom wood deck. Not just any old deck will do however, and there are several things you need to consider before you get to work building your deck.  That’s why choosing an experience team like Brad's Construction is your best choice!

We realize that you've got many choices when it comes to a custom deck builder in our Wisconsin service area. We want you to know we understand and appreciate the commitment you are about to make to your home and we take it very seriously. When you choose Brad's Construction you're choosing a partner in making your home a better place. We guarantee it!

Why Would You Choose To Build A Wood Deck Instead Of A Composite Deck?

When it comes to choosing a material for a new deck, homeowners often weigh the benefits and drawbacks of traditional wood decking, such as cedar or pressure-treated lumber, against newer composite decking materials.

Here are several reasons why a Wisconsin homeowner might choose traditional wood decking over composite:

  1. Aesthetics: For many homeowners, nothing matches the natural beauty of real wood. Cedar, with its rich color and grain, offers a timeless, classic look that many find more appealing than the appearance of composite materials.
  2. Cost: Wood decking, especially pressure-treated lumber, is generally more affordable upfront than composite materials. This makes it a popular choice for homeowners on a budget.
  3. Heat Retention: Real wood tends to stay cooler underfoot in hot weather compared to composite decking, which can absorb and retain heat. This could be a significant factor for homeowners in regions with warm summer climates.
  4. Ease of Repair: If a wooden deck board gets damaged, it's usually easy to replace that single board. With composite decking, especially if colors have been discontinued or batch colors slightly vary, a single damaged board can be more problematic to replace seamlessly.
  5. Environmental Considerations: Some homeowners prefer wood decking because it's a natural material. While composite decking often contains recycled content, it's typically a mix of wood fibers and plastic, and the manufacturing process can be energy-intensive.
  6. Versatility: Wood can be easier to cut and shape than composite materials, allowing for more design flexibility. Intricate patterns and designs might be more achievable with wood decking.

It's important to note that wood decking does require more maintenance than composite materials, needing regular cleaning, staining, or painting to keep it looking its best and to prevent rot and insect damage. This ongoing maintenance commitment is something homeowners need to consider when making their choice.

Questions About Wood Deck Construction?

Wood decks not only add aesthetic appeal and value to your home, but they also provide additional functional space for leisure activities, barbecues, or relaxation. They are a traditional and versatile choice, able to fit with various home styles and it's generally a more affordable material than some of the more expensive composite decking materials.

We generally use two common types of wood used for decking are cedar and pressure-treated lumber. Cedar is renowned for its rich color, natural beauty, and resistance to insects and decay. Pressure-treated lumber, typically pine, is treated with chemicals to resist rot, fungus, and wood-boring bugs. The choice between the two often depends on personal preference, budget, and maintenance willingness.

There are certainly more exotic wood options such as Ipe (Ee-pay) but it raises the cost of materials and labor substantially.

Cedar is a beautiful, high-quality wood that is naturally resistant to decay and insects. It's also less likely to warp than other woods. Cedar doesn't require treatment with chemicals, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

Pressure-treated lumber is a cost-effective choice and highly resistant to decay and insects due to the chemicals used in its treatment. It is also widely available and comes in a variety of dimensions.

The lifespan of a wood deck depends on the type of wood used and how well it is maintained. A well-maintained cedar deck can last 15-20 years, while a pressure-treated lumber deck can last up to 30 years.  How the deck is built and how the deck has been cared for make the biggest difference in it's longevity.

Annual maintenance is recommended for most wood decks. This usually involves cleaning and applying a finish to prevent water damage and UV damage. The exact frequency of maintenance can depend on the local climate and the deck's exposure to the elements.

In most cases, yes, a permit is required to ensure that the deck is built to safety standards.  At Brad's Construction we will handle the permit process for you and coordinate any required inspections once the deck is finished.  We are well versed on the local building codes and can ensure your new wood deck meets or exceeds the building codes and will pass the inspection with flying colors!

I had been wanting an egress window for years. We hired Brad's construction to install an egress window in our basement. We are very happy with the work. I have been able to add living space for the grandkids. It is so nice to have natural light in that area. The crew was professional and clean up was complete. Great job. Thank you!

We had Brad's Construction redo the whole outside of our house, new windows, siding, gutters, soffit and fascia. They did an awesome job. Taylor replied to all my questions within a day and was straight forward with everything. We got quotes from two other contractors and they gave us insane quotes and Brad's was super reasonable. Every single worker was so nice and professional, they got our huge job done in such a short amount of time and everything was always clean when they left for the day. I definitely recommend them to anyone looking, so happy we chose them, and I love the outside of my house now!

I can not say enough good things about Brads Construction. Anthony the sales representative is just an exceptional guy. So very kind and respectful. He really took the time to listen to what we had wanted and answered every question we had with complete patience. We needed our roof done sooner rather than later. From the time Anthony came over to inspect the roof and give us an estimate to time of service, it was outstanding. We had a little mishap with the delivery truck driver (not Brads Construction employee) and Brad came over to personally apologize for that and quickly offered to fix the damage. WOW! Again, exceptional service. We will be recommending them to anybody that needs their service and without a doubt be using them again if we need anything done again. Thank you Anthony and Brad for the great service! Keep up the great work!!!!!

It was time for roof replacement, and Brad gave us an estimate a few years ago prior to Covid, but the project was forgotten until this year. I asked for another estimate this year- Brad and Taylor quickly responded, and our roof is done! The workers were respectful, cleaned up after themselves, and professionally replaced our roof in a timely manner.

We recently contracted with Brad's Construction for a complete siding, roof, gutters, soffit, facia and skylight project. Our home was hail damaged and it was going to be an insurance claim. We had Erie Insurance and they were extremely difficult. Taylor stepped in and helped negotiate our insurance claim to get us the best possible settlement. He didn't have to do this, but he did and went above and beyond. We were very happy with that. Then the time came for the actual work to be done. I have worked with contractors in the past and I must say that the work these professionals did was outstanding. I'm a very detail oriented or "picky" consumer. I warned Brad ahead of time that I was a perfectionist. That wasn't necessary on my part at all because from beginning to end of the project they were always one step ahead of my questions. Their cleanup was superb and they left our home looking the best it has in 30 years. I would recommend them to anyone. My next project will go to them. Thank you Brad and your staff for an outstanding job. Special thanks to Taylor for making this all come together! You are all the best in the business!!!! Janice & Brian - Beaver Dam

Brad's Construction resided my whole house and put in a new patio door along with doing some structural repair around the door opening. They are one of the hardest working crews I've seen and they are really focused on customer satisfaction and their communication is excellent. Compared to others in the area I've used they are far and away better than all of them. Pricing was very competitive as well.
